São Paulo has been Akoma's launch home and community base for 3+ years
In São Paulo, we work with public schools, community libraries, cultural centres and festivals to host:
Semester long Pop-up school placements 3-4x a week at our partner school E.M.E.F Sebastião Nogueira Lima in Brâsilandia
An annual pop-up school for Black girls in the periferias of São Paulo’s Zona Norte region.
Annual participation at cultural events, including Festival Latinidades, the oldest cultural festival for Black women and girls in Latin America
Current and previous learning
Pop-up school placements are happening during the March-May term every year, to help us build a holistic vision of our annual pop-up school student cohorts, who will be able access our October pop-up school every year. Take a look at some of the fantastic examples of learning that are being taught to Black girls by Black teachers and community leaders 3/4 x a week!
Workshops include:
creative writing
drawing/illustration
afrobeat dance
painting and material design
digital literacy, including film making
STEM, including chemistry experiments
Our next pop-up school is in October
As selected partners to São Paulo's governing body for culture, Akoma will be hosting it's next pop-up school at the Casa da Cultura Brâsilandia.
This makes our next pop-up school even more:
accesible. The vast majority of our students can walk to our school site
creative. The space hosts a dance studio, workrooms, library and art workhouse
community focused. This is a space open to the general public in the surrounding periferia. Families and friends will be able to attend our project-based learning exhibition all year round
