Akoma's annual 'pop up school' is a new grassroots framework that uses project-based learning pedagogy to develop metacognition in Black girls through an integration of the arts, STEM projects, language acquisition, cultural competence and intergenerational mentorship.

By taking over a shared space, and leading multiple photography, engineering, design technology, fine art, public speaking, writing and music workshops, our students often showcase their learning by leading their own open exhibition to community members.

This empowers our students to:

-sense of belonging and community building with children and staff who share similar social experiences to theirs 

-employ more knowledge inquiry skills to their cognitive development as learners in a broad range of subject areas

- improve their capacity or self-efficacy to participate in mainstream schooling

- instil holistic values that support student empowerment and voice

-develop an improved capacity to circumstantial difficulties with choice making and high aspirations
