Our mission is to cultivate a global learning community for Black and Afro-Indigenous girls. Through zines, digital learning opportunities, and our annual pop-up school, Akoma promotes educational justice for marginalized communities.

Over 500 Black girls are being supported annually by our pop-up school projects in London, São Paulo and Accra.

São Paulo

In Brazil, where only 10.4% of Black women have completed higher education, and it is estimated that 94% of underage domestic workers are Black girls,

we're deepening culturally sensitive education and community infrastructure

Accra

In Ghana, where girls stay in school on average for for four years, and make up 90% of domestic workers between 5 and 17,

we're challenging child poverty, gender based discrimination and access to quality education

London

In England, where Black girls are permanently excluded from school at a rate double that of White British girls and more than half of Black British children live in poverty,

we're implementing environmental education, cultural innovation, and reimagined narratives

Our Vision

Our vision for Akoma is to create a world in which black girls are confident and informed in their choice making. Their choice making will reflect a self actualization, and empowerment of their identities as the leaders and change makers in their community. Their choices will demonstrate the ability to use intrinsic values to cultivate joy and prosperity in their individual lives and furthermore the positive impact they will have in the lives of others.
